As a technology business, we put ourselves through experience an ISO audit every year. We have also been present during our customers’ audits conducted by the Human Tissue Authority. So we understand how nerve-wracking compliance and accreditation inspections can be. Here are our 5 key success factors for laboratory compliance that we think can help remove some of the stress. 1. Know what you want to comply with and why Labs will often have a legal requirements for compliance, depending on the type of work they undertake. This may be the Human Tissue Act (HTA) if you handle cellular human tissue or the Medicines & Healthcare product Regulatory Agency (MHRA) if your work is in relation to drugs or medical devices. Compliance isn’t just about avoiding breaking the law, though. There are tangible benefits to your lab associated with running compliant processes.

GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation and was designed to give EU citizens more control over their data. The GDPR legislation came into force on 25th May 2018. Its introduction was very difficult to ignore due to the deluge of “Security Policy update” emails that went out. You’ve updated your Security Policy and allocated roles and responsibilities, but now the dust has settled, it’s time to think about how much work it will take to manage your data effectively. This can be time-consuming if you are trying to do this manually. This is where your software systems can help. But does your LIMS or CRM system have the right tools to help you achieve GDPR compliance?

We’ve heard about the impending legislation that’s shaking up the marketing and business worlds and causing all of those “We’re updating our databases” letters and “privacy notices” that keep dropping through our letter boxes, but what does it mean for you? Also, what changes do you need in your CRM or LIMS software to make sure you are compliant. The date that the changes to the data protection law come into force is 25th May 2018, which is very close now. So, we need to be sure about what changes we’re making and who needs to make them if we’re to stay legal. Is it time to panic?
