If you have recently received a grant from a funding body, then you’ll probably have to demonstrate how well you are using that funding and the difference it is making. So how do you do that without it taking up too much of your research time? When you are evidencing return on investment (ROI), using a database system can be much easier than using Excel or a paper-based system. If you have an ‘off-the-shelf’ product that has ROI reports and tools already built-in – this is even better. Choose measures that funders value If you are running a Biobank and are being funded to support research, then simply having a rapidly growing number of samples in your stores doesn’t mean that you’re supporting research effectively. It just shows that you’ve got a rapidly growing collection. If, instead, you record the number of samples being dispatched to researchers then that’s of much more interest to a funder. If you are in the early phase of establishing a Biobank and aren’t dispatching many samples yet, then you could report the number of samples that are visible to the research community. You could do this by recording the number of samples uploaded to […]

Money is always tight these days. In addition, in these uncertain times everyone is little more cautious. This is even more true for funding bodies, whether they are governmental departments having to tighten their belts or small charities managing their generously given donations. All funders are looking for the maximum “Bang for their buck” and so return on Investment (ROI) is critical to their decision-making. Demonstrating how Biobanks maximise return on investment is more critical now than ever. Biobanks looking for a slice of that funding need to be really clear about how each pound is to be spent. This includes what the benefits will be and to make that clear to the funding bodies. Funders need to be sure that you are using their money wisely and with the right aims. This is a challenge across the whole research community and many organisations are coming up with some clever and innovative differentiators. However, there are a few basic points that you should always looks to include when calculating return on investment. Set achievable goals Firstly, be really clear about what you are aiming to achieve. Long-term aspirations are great to give the direction of travel but you also need […]

Whether you are setting up a new Biobank or reapplying for further funding, you need to demonstrate to the funding bodies that their money will be put to best use and be used efficiently. You need to ensure that you tick all of the right boxes and, if it is a reapplication, the criteria might have changed since the initial funding award. There are some key considerations when applying for Biobank funding that can help you move one step closer to obtaining your funding. 1: Maximise your visibility Biobanks hold biological samples to be used in research. Therefore, researchers need to be aware of your samples so they can request them and use them in their research. Samples that sit in freezers are not fulfilling the wishes of the generous donors. You can only achieve this if your samples are requested, issued and then used. As a Biobank you want to ensure that the greatest number of researchers are aware of your biological sample holdings. A good way to maximise visibility is to register your Biobank with a directory such as the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) This will help put you in touch with researchers looking for the types of samples […]
